The La Canada High School PTSA invites the community to participate in Red Ribbon Week from October 18-22, 2021. Red Ribbon Week is a national program that aims to raise awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community. The program also encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles along with mental and physical wellness.

The LCHS PTSA, along with the LCHS Wellness Center, will be offering programming and resources to students and parents throughout the week. Student support will come in the form of informational handouts, posters and a lunchtime mural project. Due to current COVID restrictions, we will not be able to hold a school-wide assembly as we have done in the past.

Parents can participate in an online Family Learning Series presentation, “When To Worry,” facilitated by Liz Schoeben of SAGE Counseling Services on Thursday, October 21 at 6:30 pm. (Zoom link is at the bottom of this email). Time will also be allotted at the PTSA meeting on Thursday, October 21 for discussion and resource sharing.

To kick things off, we’d like to share some excellent online resources for parents:
  • For a comprehensive, multi-media campaign focusing on talking to your children early about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs, take a look at the Substance Use & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s “Talk. They Hear You” campaign.
  • Visit the Partnership to End Addiction’s website for science- and research-backed information on preventing adolescent drug use and responding when you suspect or have discovered use.
  • To learn more about the connection between mental health conditions and substance use, visit the National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH/NIDA) webpage on co-occurring disorders.
  • For more information on vaping, visit the Surgeon General’s online publication “Talk With Your Teen About E-cigarettes: A Tip Sheet for Parents”.

We envision this week to be the start of a vital, on-going conversation about substance use and mental health in our community. Look for additional programming from the Wellness Center throughout the year. If you have any questions about Red Ribbon Week, please contact co-chairs Holly Biondo ([email protected]) and Jamie Abrahamian ([email protected]).
